Globalstar Enhances and Expands Data Coverage

Globalstar has announced two enhancements to its data solutions service.

First, Direct Internet access by dialing (#777) is now available for Globalstar customers while traveling in Mexico. Before this enhanced service was offered Globalstar/GlobalCom customers would need to dial up an Internet provider which could result in a slower connection to the Internet as well as possibly cause additional expense to the customer from the Internet provider. Now while a customer travels in Mexico they have direct Internet access without using an Internet provider. In addition to the direct Internet access Globalstar is now offering Express Data which greatly improves the data speed when accessing the Internet. Globalstar native data speed is 9.6K when a customer subscribes to Globalstar Express Data the speed at which the customer can access the Internet is increased to 56K which is a drastic improvement. This is great news for maritime data users in the Gulf of Mexico and near Baja California.

Secondly, Globalstar has launched simplex data service from the Venezuelan gateway. Globalstar simplex data modem users will now have complete coverage in the Venezuelan service area. The Venezuelan service area includes the Caribbean, Central America, and northern portions of South America. This additional coverage expands Globalstar’s current coverage provided by two North American gateways which has provided coverage in the U.S. and Canada since 2003. The simplex data coverage also includes Europe and across the north Atlantic region.

The Globalstar simplex data modems is a low cost one way satellite data service which uses approved simplex modems and the Globalstar quick locate service to track mobile assets which include vehicles and marine vessels. The Globalstar simplex data service can also be used to send data from fixed monitoring devises and security applications to the Globalstar satellite constellation. These fixed assets can send an alert when a security device is tripped or send data when a certain condition is met through a temperature change or meter reading change. Companies can now monitor their assets economically from virtually anywhere in the Globalstar quick locate service area. Data is sent from one of the approved simplex modems to the Globalstar constellation which includes 48 low-earth-orbiting satellites then is transmitted to a Globalstar gateway. This information can be accessed through a web based application Globalstar offers its customers. Third party solutions are offered for more enhanced services beyond the basic tracking service Globalstar offered with the quick locate service.
