U.S. Army utilizes the Globalstar Quick Locate Service
GlobalCom provides the AXTracker satellite simplex modem to the U.S. Army. These units are going to be used to track convoy/container movements in Afghanistan. A representative with the Army quoted as saying: “We will be using them to track convoy/container movements in the Afghan Theater. Our first priority is to ensure our cargo gets to the intended locations. This can be a challenge as there are sometimes bandits and boarder crossing issues. Additionally, some of our cargo is moved via local trucking companies, which has its own unique set of challenges. We are also hoping to track delivery times and use this data to better manage our supply pipeline. We’re really looking forward to implementing the AXTrackers”. Another requirement the Army had was that the units be HERO certified. This certification is required when fuel or ammunitions are transported. The HERO certification for a product insures the components of the product are spark resistance. The AXTracker or GMC Sentinel Simplex Transmitter along with the Globalstar Quick Locate Service allows a customer to track assets which can include trucks, trailers, generators most anything that is normally transported outdoors can be tracked using this service. FEMA utilized this service beginning last year to track numerous items used after the hurricanes damaged Florida and Alabama. They were able to recover equipment that would have normally been lost.
The Quick Locate Service is available with the option of two plug and play simplex devices. These units will send 6 GPS location reports per day. In addition, the devices have one digital port/input which can be used to provide customers with additional monitoring and event-driven capabilities as required. Examples of the additional monitoring would be if a door switch is activated or if the temperature drops below a certain level in a refrigerated vehicle. The reports will be available for customers to access via the Quick Locate Service on the Globalstar website. The easy-to-use service offers a view of last GPS report or can immediately link to Map quest for a graphical picture of the unit's location.
Both Simplex modems are battery-operated, wireless data devices that integrate the Globalstar Simplex Transmitter Unit. These units are ready-to-go out of the box and easy to install. Both have batteries with a 2 year life that can be easily replaced in the field. Power consumption estimates based 6 messages per day. Results may vary.
