How the Cellular Portion of the Globalstar Satellite Phone Works

Note: GlobalCom CANNOT guarantee the local cellular provider in your area will activate the cellular portion of the Globalstar phone. It is at the discretion of the cellular provider to activate the cellular portion of the Globalstar phone.

You have the option of activating the Globalstar Satellite phone with a local compatible cellular provider which uses CDMA or (Code Division Multiple Access) technology. Also the phone operates on analog 800 MHz technologies. In most cases Verizon or Alltel uses this technology. The programming of the cellular portion of the phone works much like the Qualcomm QCP-860 phone. Any cellular provider that uses CDMA digital and 800 MHz analog technology will be compatible with the cellular portion of the phone. The user would have a separate cellular phone number and cellular phone billing from the cellular provider. The same is true for the satellite portion of the phone. You would have a satellite phone number beginning with area code 254 which is a Texas based phone number. You would also receive Globalstar satellite phone service billing directly from Globalstar which GlobalCom arranges for you.

The phone can to be set up to first look for cellular and if it finds a cellular signal it will use the cellular portion of the phone in cell mode. When outside cellular range the Globalstar phone can either automatically switch to satellite mode or it can be manually switched to satellite mode. This preference is set up by the user of the phone.

If the phone is being used in cellular mode while on a active call and the user moves out of cellular range this call cannot be automatically switched to over to satellite mode because the user is using two separate services which use two separate technologies. Conventional cellular service is terrestrial based and of course the satellite service uses a satellite constellation. The reverse is also true if the user is using the phone while in satellite mode and re-enters cellular range it is not possible to automatically switch the call to cellular service.

In most cases users will enjoy a stronger cellular signal on the Globalstar satellite phone than they experienced with their smaller cellular phone.

Note: CDMA or (Code Division Multiple Access) technology, which was pioneered by QUALCOMM this is the basis for third generation networks globally
